Depriving Overthink of Oxygen
This headline doesn't sound very nice. Or friendly. But hey, that's what overthink is. Not friendly, and definitely not nice. It has its place in the creative process, but can easily become a dictator for fear, you give it a thumb, and before you know, it has consumed, not only your hand, your legs but also your creative soul.
Overthink is powerful, but untamed power is destructive.
Just like you, overthink needs space and time. Time, and that's what this post is about, removing time oxygen from overthinking. That will mean that a part of you will feel like it's suffocating. But, it'll also open a brief door into the creative potential that lurks shily behind a threshold.
Moving into practicality. Away from theory (where overthink lives, haha) - there are several applications that offer a helpful framework to (temporarily) eliminate overthink.
In these applications (see links below) - you can choose a time limit, say 5 or 10 minutes. You start, and if you stop, you'll lose everything you have written. Scary, but effective.
Each time I feel stifled, stuck, I reach towards one of these apps. It becomes beside the point the 'what' I write, but I actually write, I actually see words manifest on paper.
We have Flowstate, we also have 'The Most Dangerous Writing App' that can do this. Here are the links to these apps. I recommend starting with 'The Most Dangerous Writing App' - because it's easily accessible as a web application.
